Cultivating the art of the encounter in all its forms. All throughout the year, Hammana Artist House offers a local, international, multidisciplinary and diverse artistic programme which invites us to awaken our curiosity and our ability to perceive the world poetically. During a performance, the public experiences another way of thinking and explores new perspectives often absent from everyday life. Instilling the desire for art and culture can nourish an open, emancipated and confident disposition to the world. The regular year-long programming of HAH, with a particular highlight during summer, constitutes a part of a decentralised geography of art production and distribution. It hosts and showcases diverse disciplines as well as multidisciplinary productions in HAH, in the public spaces of the village, and in different natural sites in the mountains. HAH has always been keen to present performances, screenings, talks, and exhibitions in partnership with other cultural organisations, combining resources to give rural areas access to quality artistic offers. Through Collectif Kahraba's professional network, HAH nurtured many collaborations, allowing some programmed events to be co-produced or co-hosted in partnership with cultural organisations and festivals willing to expand the reach of their activities outside of the capital, supporting the decentralisation of culture. In that way, HAH aims to connect partners, artists and audiences from different regions, creating encounters between people.

Biodiversity & Cinema التنوع البيولوجي والسينما

8 films to discover this summer along with a unique experience!
The "Biodiversity and Cinema" program is the first collaboration in Lebanon between 22 environmentalists and filmmakers who took part in a biodiversity residency in December 2023 and then worked on the production of 8 short documentaries. Their films were shown this summer in Kobayat in Akkar, and will be screened soon Bkassine in Southern Lebanon, Tripoli, Beirut and various locations in the Bekaa.
Don't miss them in Hammana!

A unique experience in the Arab world led by Hammana Artist House, the REEF association and AFLAMUNA, the "Biodiversity and Cinema" program uses cinema as a lever for promoting Lebanon's natural heritage. The aim is for local communities to have a better understanding of biodiversity, its importance and the need to preserve it.
Shot in various regions of Lebanon, the 8 films tackle different themes relating to the preservation of biodiversity: pesticides and permaculture in the Bekaa, the private takeover of common property illustrated by the sale of a grotto in northern Lebanon, the danger of imported invasive plants, the natural link between ancestral feminine traditions and the protection of the land, ornithological observation, the importance of endemic species such as the juniper or the Matthiola flower, and the challenges surrounding water resources from Tripoli to the Qornet El Saouda mountain.

The project is supported by the French Embassy in Lebanon, the French Institute in coordination with Lebanon Eco Movement and benefited from a production grant from IMS (International Media Support)

Heroes - Surface of a Revolution

“Heroes (Surface of revolution)” is a choreographic creation focusing on the subject
of representations of the body in relation to power. It questions the body as a medium
of influence that is mediatised through the image of itself. Is it power that creates
the image within us? Or is it rather we, masses thirsty for leaders, who create and
maintain it? How does someone’s body become a symbol of power? How, by the
body’s own fall, is the fall of power announced? How do the changes in the image of a
hero, an icon or an idol operate? What about this disturbing feeling that is profoundly
destabilizing when we attempt to hold on to, or let go of, a power that is in the midst
of this decline? Heroes become “accessible” and more easily identifiable as their
bodies resemble ours more and more. Is this not an illusion?

Tajawor Sufi

It is the production of a contemporary Arab musical artist, featuring the poetry of some Arab Sufi mystics and poets from our Arab region. The idea and research around collecting these poems began in 2018 when Salwa realized that, from all the previous period, only the names of male Sufis were prominent in her mind. As for the women, she had only heard of the Sufi Rabiaa al-Adawiyya and some female poets, but what about the others? This is where the research started, along with attempts to gather their poems and life stories. This culminates in a complete collaborative musical work, departing from individualism and the concept of a single composer, instead relying on the collection of ideas and the spontaneity of the musical moment, resulting in musical ideas imbued with creativity and improvisation.
In this project, the aim is to make this work spiritual, collective, and improvisational, which is the core idea Salwa is focusing on. Hence, there was caution and careful consideration in selecting instruments and harmonizing voices. It is essential to work with a team that possesses a vast musical repertoire and shares a spiritual connection and a shared understanding of musical life, in order to create this energy.
After selecting and composing the chosen poems, later on, the process involves sound processing, categorizing the pieces, and recording the first album.

Riding on a Cloud

The theater piece of the director Rabih Mroué is an impressive combination of the personal and political: For RIDING ON A CLOUD he invites his brother Yasser to play the role of a character that resembles him personally. A person, who was injured during the Lebanese civil war and lost his ability to use words, Yasser began to shoot videos, which fuse with his recounted memories on stage to form a subjective picture of the political developments in Lebanon. RIDING ON A CLOUD also describes the fragile construction of biography, which emerges between political reality, memories, facts and fiction. For Mroué this is always the starting point for artistic self-reflection, which he then transposes for the theater and exhibitions.
